The present mm).'- of su.vcosßion to the throne in England wan (iriiiily determined by the Act ot Settlement parsed by Parliament in May, 1701, and by virtue ot which the throne ot Great Britain was settled uirm the descendants of the Protestant Elec tress, Sophia of Hanover, instead of upon the Jose remote but Roman Oattiuhi; descendants of the Stuart Kings. now represented by Princess ivouia of Bavaria, whom ultra legitimists and members of the White ißose League profess to regard as the ngiafui monarch of England. Princess Louis, whose husband ie tho eldest son ot tno Regent of Bavaria, is descended from King Charles 1., who lost his head on the scaffold, whereas the present occupant of tho British throne is obliged to go further back, namely, to King Charles' father, King James, in order to establish his connection with the Stuart line.
Incidentally it may be mentioned that the Act of Scitiemeut, by virtue oi widen the present B-tnovarian dynasty holds the Crown of England, was passed by 11 majority of a e>nsilo vote. Had that one vote been given oa the olhoi elde, Princess Louis of Bavaria might b( to-day Queen of Great Britain and Empress of India.
