ASHBUETONSALE.
The attendance at the Tinwald yards on Tuesday was very large and the entries were abovb the usual average. Bidding was brisk. A good line of 30 two-year-old cattle was withdrawn at £3 19s. Tho following are representative prices :- Cattle, steers, £4 10s to £0 17s 6<J, heifers £4 5s to £5 3s 6d, eows £4 ]os to £7 10s, vealer 13?, dairy cows £1 5.i to £6, yearlings £2 10s. Early in the week new wheat was purchased at 2s IOJd at ft siting, and later on 3s was given for milling of prime quality (similar conditions). No sales of old wheat are reported. There have been a number of complaints from buyers that the new wheag is soft and undeveloped and farmers would do well to bear this in mind. Bailey has. found purchasers at 2s lOd to 2s lid, at sidings, for good quality lines, while for prim* maltiug-38 has bpen Riven. Potatoes (kidneys) are coming forward in Ja*-ge qfoaitities, and the market is weak. Eerwents have hern offered for forward delivery and the best, price mentioned wa3 27s 6d at sidings g(sacfcs in). We quote—Wheat new, : "Prime mil'ing 3s at sidings ; old (prime milling), 2s lid to 3s. Oats.— Danish 2* Id to 2* 2i 2d. The entry of stock in all departments was fairly large and the attendance was thn moat; numerous this season, the store sheep market attracting more than the avi rage number of farmers and graziers, and there were visitors from the North Island,• Otago, and the back country in Canterbury, who have come in for the ram and ewe fair. Shesp—There was -on entry of 12,616 store sheep, and now that harvest is over and the n.in has improved the feed prospeots, thtre was a good demand for all classes. The faCi that the season is also advancing caused holders to be more disposed to sell, and the sale was therefore a satisfactory one tor all good lines of ewes ond young sheep. Price* improved about Is per head on later There wore seve-al lines ou offer that wgro purchased at the late Amuri fair,. Tut the prices realised would little more. than clear the railage from Cttlverdea and the cost of selling. The number of fat lamba offfTed was 2400, about 60 less than last weak. The sale opened very dull bttfc imprevbd later on, though prices wert not quite up to the previous week's rates for freezers. Butcher*' lambs, however, sold better, as there was a leaser number offered in the sma,U pens. Threw 1628, were taken for freezing at 10s, 6d to 133 6.1 : and one e*tra pen, 14js 6d ; 166 weie l:Oiight by butchers at, 10s to 13s 9d : 270 by graziers at 6s 6a to 9* 4d; and 436 passed at 8s 3d to 13a "3d, most of which got to the factory on owners'" account. There waa a small mixed yarding of fat sheep, a l&rgefnumber that were being r&iled from the northern, districts being delayed. Catj'iK-rThe number of fat cattle that were i ffered at auction was 146, and in consequence of this small supply prices were firmer. Another lot of 36 came in afterwards and weae sold privately, the demand not having been satisfied. Steers made £6 5s to £9 7s"6d ; heifers, £5 10a to £8 7s 6d, and cows £5 15s to equal to 17a 63 to 22s per lOOlbs. There, was a large yarding of pigs, including a considerable proportion of unfinished fats. There was a dull sale for baconers and porkers, prices being easier, but large stores 'were in .faic demand up to certain limits. Baconera m*dc 32s 6d to 455, equal to 3Jd per lbs porkers, 20s to 30«, equal to 3§d per lb ; large stores, 15s to 23s ; others, 8s to 12s, and suckers and weaners, 4s to 7*3.
ENGLISH MARKETS,
The Agent General's cable message, dated London: March Bth, to the Agricultural Department at Wellington is am follows :—" The mutton market is firm, and has a better tone this week. Very few prime oircaara of mutton have been marketed lately. The average price today for Canterbury, is 3£d; Dunedio, Southland, and Wellington Meat Export Company's brand, 3s; other North Island descriptions, 3JfJ. There -'g &. detvand for lamb. Shipments of River Plate lamb are increasing. The average price to day for Canterbury brands is s£d other than Canterbury, ssd. The beef market is quiet. New Zealand hinds, 4£ f"res, 3i.d. Bmter is dull at 110 s. The cheese market is very firm at 51s* Hemp is dull at £3B. Reports from Manilla indicate that heavy shipments; or hemp aio expected. There is a disposition to s ell distant hemp.
