THE VETERINARY DEPARTMENT.

TO Tin.: i'DITOK. Sir. —Permit mo through tne columns of your valuable) paper to point out the way tnat tho Government Veterinary Department of Timaru attend to their duties. About four months ago I had a visit from Stock Inspector Mnnro who said that I had a cow which, in his opinion was suffering from tuberculosis. Ido said ho would ad vise tho veterinary surgeon about n- T turned the co ,v out at once and waited for about two months without In uring anything morn about tho matter. I then wrote to Tiimmi, to tho veterinary surgeon, and a reply came back that'if I tilled in tho fo.mis ho enclosed and guaranteed ta poy ns Od per head for nh the cattle I wanted tested, ho would come down. I did as lie requested but have hoard not a word from him sinco. Now, sir, I say the Veterinary Department is a very expensive one tho taxpayers, and that if this is tho way they carry out their duty it is a farce. If tho staff is overworked, more men ought to be put on to cope with the work. If it is tho fault of the staff they should bo relieved and efficient men put on.

In this district tire lambs have been dvmg to the extent of twenty por cent in many cases, and I have never seen n word of advice from our Veterinary Department us to the cause. Hoping you will give thif publication for the benefit of tho general public. I am etc., Morvkn.
