Opening of Glenavy Saleyards.
Yesterday at one o'clock the formal opening of the new'Baleyards lately erected by Mr Ralph Porter, of the Glencoe Hotel, took place, there being a good attendance of buyers and others. T „ Mr Burbury, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Oamarii, in declaring the yards open, said the opening of yards at .Glenavy had long been talked of, but until the cutting up of Waikakahi the population had not beea sufficient to the project. Henderson could carry it out he was removed by death. However," Mr Porter, bis successor, had followed the matter up, and as aresult they had the Very credit- . able yards now before them. Rhere were not better yards in New Zealand, but to ensure their success it was necessary that the farmers should bring their stock and be prepared to quit it at fair market values. 'Everybody was prepared to give a fair thing, but they would not get 22s 6d for a sovereign's worth at Glenavy or anywhwre else. He declared the yards open. Selling was then , proceeded with, prices ruling as follows : —. 11 fat crossbred lambulCte, 69 cull lambs' 5s Bd, 88 fat wethers 15s, 60 fat crossbred ewes 9s Id, 36 crossbred wethers 13s 6d, 11 two tooth ewes and wethers 1i5,,42 two-tooth wethers 12s 3d, 120 aged owqs 4s 3d, 481 two-tooth store v/ethers 13tf, 41.5 two-tooth q,wos sold in two lots at 12rf lid, 48 lambs 10.-. sd, 26 iambs 9s 2.1, 00 ftit 4-tooth wethers 15h, 212 two-fonth owes and wethers 11a 4d, 180 do. "Hs, "52 two-tooth , wethers 18s, 47 lambs 9s '3d, 2afat lambs lis Id. There were passed in 125 halfbred ewe's, 116 Km. crossbred ewes, 35Q,balfbred awes, 2S'0 f , crossbruda, 350 lambs,, j 231 4 and 8-tooth ewes'at 11* 3d, 357 8 tooth ewes af'Bs\)/299 twotooth eV/t-s »nd wether a.at 12s 8;!," 095 four-toorh ewt-B at 15b 3 i, 43 t';it ewes and werhers at 9s 7d,\ .- 118 maiden ewes at I2s, 180 four, and six-toofli ' ewes without an ofiV.r, and 201 lambs at 5s 7d. Cattle.—Steers, £5 Joa, £5 "2*, £2 2riGd, £2'7s 61; bniters, £2 lw; sprinwr.s £3 15s, £2.'1.2s 01 ; uowsvi'7 7s 9d, £7 7s'6d,£s 7s 6 I, £7 ss, £O, £0 2s Gd, and passed at. £3 17s 6d ; calves at £2 and upwards ; t'at cows, £3 17s. All bidding dragged somewhat' at. times.
The yards themselves are excellently fitted up, and have accommodation for from 25,000 to 80,000 sheep and 450 cattle. Thwi'e is a rostrum and several tiers of seats at the cattle yards, so that buyers have every comfort.
