The Ninth Contingent
f The Waimate quota of fourteen men left by Saturday's express. The number was fifteen, but Farrier-Sergfe. McTaggarfc (Morven) telegraphed his inability to go and there was no time to select another in hia place. The men were marched from the drillshed to the station by Oapt. Garland, Piper Cooper playing inspiriting tunes en the pipes. The railway platform was densely crowded, and a great deal cf enthusiasm was shown. As the train steamed out hearty cheers were given for the troopers, and several signals placed en the line exploded and added & warlike touch to the scene. At ; *ha Junction the men were formed up for the arrival \ o' ib.9 north -express, which was bringing down the northern quotas.. These occupied several carziages., and greeted their future comrades kstily. "LieuGenat'it-Colonel Bailey, and Sergeant. Major Coleman, who were oa the train, inspected the draft ami called the roll, and the men wero sent aboard the train. A good few returned troopers v/cro among the men,, mostly of the Fifih Contingent, the earlier ouas hjimj sparsely r«p:'o- ! sen tod, if at all.
