Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy left Timaru on Friday,jon A .visit to England/ Mr Eobt. Bell, of Hook, who underwent a serious operation last week, ia slightly improving. Mr A. B. Barclay, M.H.R. for Dunedin* arrived on a short visit to Waimate by yesterday's express. The young man Clear, found with eeli-inflicted wounds last week, has bid his throat stitched up, and ia getting on well. The name of Mr Alex. Clapcott, formerly of Waimate,.appears in .the list of Dunedia members of the Ninth Contingent. Mr McCoombs, who has been actingstationmaster at Waimate during Mr Stewart's absence on his holidays, leaves for Christchurch today. Mr J. H. Coombs, manager of the Dresden Piano Co.'s Timaru branch, arrived in Waimate yesterday afternoon. He leaves by to-day's express. At the Canterbury Typographical Society's meeting on Saturday evening Mr A. Wilson was elected president and Mr F. J. Wilson a Labour Council delegate. Both gentlemen were for. merly of Waimate. Tbe Premier has received through the Governor his official invitation to the coronation ceremony. It states that His Majesty, desires the Premier to be in London a few days before the ceremony, and that from his arrival ha ia to consider himself a guest of >HU Majesty. The JSang nrQt be farther pleased if ibe Premier is' accompanied by a Udy member of bis family.
Mr J. Stewart, stationniister at Wi-imate, is leaving that station. We understand he was offered a transfer to Stratford, North Island, and accepted it. His many friends will be very sorry to learn this. ' Among the passengers for "Wellington by the Karamea, duo today, are the Hon. A: J.. Oadman, M.L.0., and Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., who have been at Home for 6ome time in connection with the flotation of a company, to deal with the Ta/anaki ironsancl sepos»t3.
Trooper Geo. Gsddes, who left Waimato- with the Sixth Contingent and was invalided hooae through wounds, arrived on Friday afternoon. He was met by His Worship the Mayor and formally welcomed, a number of comrades and" friends heartily sheering him. Although temporarily deprived cf this use of oao lag Trooper Geddoa is expected to recover befors long.
Messrs B. Poster and Chas. Manchester, who lof l - Waimate on a trip to Australia and Tasmania, reached W&ima'a by Friday'3 express. They visited Sydney, Melbourne (having the pleasure of seeing the l&so test match) and then crossing to Hobart, went to Mr Porter's former home. Tliev thoroughly enjoyed the trip, their only trouble being thao thesis weeko passed so quickly. Mr £-, K. Richards, Inspector for the Ocean Accidont and Guarantee Corporation, was in town on Saturday arranging for compensation to Mr T. Chamberlain, who wan recontly injured at Pentlatid Hills. Th::s was arrangi-d satisfactorily. In conversation with m representative of this paper Mr Richards expressed the opinion that the Act would never give satisfaction until it fully compensated a workman for the loss of time and money due to the accident.
