Funeral.
The funeral of the late Gnnner T. Freeman of. the Permanent Artillery took place on Sunday afternoon from the house of his mother, High street. The deceased wag one of the Waimate members of tho Second Contingent, and being born in Waimate and having always been very popular it was natural that his obsequies should be attended by an exceeding'y large number of persons. The Waimate Brass Band, followed by the Waimate Rifles' firing party with arms reversed, played the u Dead March" along the whole route. The hearse came next, followed by the relatives of the deceased, and the Waitnate Rifles under Captain Barclay, the Stud holme Mounted Rifles under Captain Garland, tho Masonic Lodge and the Oddfellows' Lodge proceeding a very large procession of the public, in faofc it is long since such a number gathered to show respect to Waimate dead.
Arriving at St. Augustine's church the funeral service was conducted by Lieut.-Chaplain MoKenzie Gibson. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack and the pall-beaiers were six of the deceased's comrades in the Permanent Artillery Gunners Macgregot, Lee, Malmanch, O'Brien and Bropley, under Corporal Moir. The Bad cortega then resumed its maroh to the Waimate cemetery, where the final ceremony was conducted by the Chaplain, the firing party firing three volleys over th« grave. A number of beautiful wreaths w re sent, including one from the deceased's comrades in tbe Ba'tery. Deceased was 21 year 3 of ag •.. and respected by all who knew h : m. The sad event cast quite a er'nom over the towrs People fom all parts of the country cama to attend the faneral and to exprei'3 their sincere sympathy with Mrs Freeman, and her family in their sad bereavement, and innumerable letters and telegrams have been received with tho same purports.
