If Colonel Davies had been allowed to appoint, and one or more of bis selections bad proved incompetent, the critics, whilst not absolving him from all blame, would have placed the Major part of it on the Premier's shoulders, and would have lectured him for haying permitted another to do what be himself should have done. We feel sure that the Eighth Contingent will be fairly ;wdl officered, probably quite as well as; wopld have been the ease if the patronage had been allowed to rest with.
