THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1901.
Op all the Acts placed on the Statute Bo< e] : during the last few sessions, that entitled the " Workmbn's Compensation for Accidents Act, 1900," excited the most comment, and indeed the most alarm. Bat Time, which allays all troubles, is proving that the bogie is not such a dreadful one after all, and that, except in case of death by acti lent, little or ,no hardship is experienced by the employer of labour, ■while—and this is the weakest point of all—there is but little compensation for the injured person. According to Clause 5 : "■ The employer shall not be liable under this Act in respect of any injury which does not disable the worker for a period of at least two weeks from earning full wages at the work at which he was employed, nor in respect of an injury which is proved to be directly attributable to the serious and wilful misconduct of the worker." Suppose a man were so badly injured as to be laid up for a month, but that at the end of that time he was again at work, perhaps with some permanent disfigurement which would, however, not prevent him from earning full wages, all he is entitled to receive is a week's waeesl He ■ ■ . .-,' C : ':.-'.it?.;';- ;'.-'!. the insprftrice companies,''.who are obtaining, premiums wholesale with scarcely a protest, and with a modicum of risk that they will ever be called on to pay a hundredth part of the losses sustained by life or fire insurance. This is gradually .becoming the opinion throughout the colony, experience proving that the wholesome principle sought to be enunciated, that if a workman sustains an accident in anyone's employ ha should receive adequate compensation, has resolved . itself merely into . compensation in case of death or total disability. It is therefore of little use to those who will suffer, while the employer pays as if it wero. This is where an alteration is bound to ' 3 take place in the near future if the Act is to be worthy of a place ~ on the Statute Book.
