Waimate Borough Council.
The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, present —His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Bitchener, BarclaVi Cameron. Inkster, Nicol, Sinclair, Freeman and Coltman. -CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and dealt with : Frotn the Agricultural Department, asking the Council tu cancel the appointment of any inspectors of slaughter houses. Fromthe Police Office, Ghristchurch, re tbe question of an additional constable for Waimate, that the matter had been referred to the Commissioner of Police.
A circular re infectious diseases was read, asking the Council to arrange for someone to act in any case of infectious disease occurring between Council meetings.—Councillors Inkster, Nicol and Cameron were appointed to act for the Council.
From the Department of Labour, re the declaration of the weakly half holiday. From the Hon. W. J. Steward, stating that 'a new fence would be erected to the police grounds, and the courthouse renovated.
The rates of a borough resident were remitted on aecount of poverty. From W. M. Hamilton for J. Molloy, applying that a right-of-way near Mr yytuon'a bakehouse should be allowad as in the past. —Application granted. From the Oddfellows' Lodge, applying for a license for their hall Jor meetings for the year 1902.—Granted subject to certain conditions. From a ratepayer, asking Council's sanction to transfer his lease of borough section to a«otftierratepayer. —Sanction not given. From J. RavenhaU, asking the Council to pay him L 3 for rent overpaid and L2 for loss of use of the section, the use of which was taken by Mr B. P. Smith.—Mr Coltman said Bavenhall had been hardly deu.lt with, but the Council had not wittingly erred.—A committee consisting of His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Coltman and Freeman were appointed to go into the matter. Mr Baxter forwarded a tracing showing the true levels of Michael street. — It was decided to call for tenders for the reforming and metalling of this street, the Works Committee to arrange details. The Borough surfaceman reported having attended to water-tables during the three weeks, shingle had been put on Butcher's Lane, Victoria Terrace and the Gorge road, the drain had been fixed at Butche.r's Lane. Shingle was being put on Rhodes street, and Harris street from High to Manse streets required attention. The drain across Parsonage road co?t L 5 3s, of which half should be paid by the County Council. The Sanitary Inspector reported the Borough in good order. One ratepayer would not cut his gorge fence. The Inspector recommended that the gorse in the.Waimate Creek near the footbridge should be cut as it endangered the bridge in case of fire. A horse was being constantly tethered in Harris street &nd the Inspectoi asked for instructions.
The matter of the gorse cutting was left to the inspector to deal with. The Inspector was instructed to take action re the horse grazing if it occurred again. The dog tax was fixed at ss, shepherds, and sporting dogs half rates. The clerk is to obtain quotations for collars, and to get them made for the New Year.
The Council office is to he closed from December 23 to January 4.
Accounts amounting to L 73 15s 2d were passed for payment.
