Waimate District High School.
ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING.
The annual prize giving ceremony in connection with the Waimafce District High School took place in the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday afternoon. Mr W. M. Hamilton, chairman of the school oommittee, presided, and there was a gcol attendance of parents and children. Mr Hamilton first apologised for the absence of the Rev. G. Barclay, who was at a meeting of the Education Board, and of Mrs Studholme, who had been asked to present the prizes. Mr Hamilton said that several members of the 1 High School Board had been a3kad to be present, but none of them could come, and the Board would not be represented. He congratulated the school on the excellent results of the annual examination. Nothing particular had occurred during the year. It was worth noting that thires '-of the 'boys belonging to the school had last year obtained situations in the Civil Service, which was sufficient proof of the good work being done at the school. The speaker enlarged,. on the benefits'to be received from attending school. He referred briefly to the penalties now to be. imposed for absence from school, and to the early closing of the school on account of strawberry picking. Mr Hamilton thanked Mrs Adams and Mrs Studholme for special prizes, and the Oddfellows for the use of the Hail at a nominal rate. He called upon Mrs Hamilton to present the-following prizes:— Bewin&. SCRIPTURE PRIZES
Tho Rev A. S. Morrison officiated over the presentation of prizes for scripture knowledge. He gave the children some good advice about what they should learn while they were young. Referring to the teaching of the scripture in the school, the speaker declared that the Ministers and tho people of the district were indebted to the teachers for their labour of love. He asked the pareuts to co-operate in this teaching, especially in the buying of text books. He urged the children to read the bible as. they did their other story books ' The speaker condoled with those children who had worked hard, but, who had not been successful in getting a priza. Their reward was the knowledge of having done, their best. He proceeded to give out the prizes as follow: — High School: Ida Mann, 1; Ethel Adams and Hetty Julian, 2. Standard V 1.;.: Gwennie Taylor, t; Jeannie Fagan, 2. Standard V.: Lizzie Boyd, 1; Errol Taylor, 2. In conclusion Mr Hamilton announced that the school would re open on Jannary 27th, and he hoped the children would haVe '" a. aood time" in the holidays. Mr C.-J. Goldsfcone called for cheers for the Committee, for Mrp Hamilton, and for the donors of; special prizes, and these were given with a will.
Cheers teachers brought, the proceedings to a ciose.
At an interval the infants, who were grouped on the stage, sang two pretty action songs under the able direction of Miss Crawford. An exhibition of very good club swinging by ten girls of the upper standards was loudly applauded. Mis 3 A. Miller officiated: at the piano.
