In 1881 he acted as secretary-general of the International Medical Congress in London, and, in consideration of his services in this capacity, the late Queen conferred upon him the honour of knighthood. Sir William was the author of “ Work under the Red Cross ” and treatises on “ Antiseptic Surgery ” and “ Surgical Operations,” besides numerous surgical papers contributed to medical journals and addressed. to medical societies. la 1899 Sir William want to South Africa on a special mission for the British Government and as consulting surgeon to the hLtrnj Medical Corps.
