Waimate Choral and Orchestral Union.
-■■■■■ -O ■■ ' ■ This evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, the Society will rentier Cowan's " Rose Maiden," a cvtntaM. introducing a great doal of very beautiful music. The " argument " is as follows : " The Qußen of Flower Fairies, weary of a life of unbroken calm, prays of the newly roturned Spring that he will bestow upon her aiso the gift of love he bestows upon man. He warns her of the risk she rang, but finally yield* to her entreaties by changing her while she sleep 3 into the form of a beautiful girl. Under the name of Roseblossom, she wanders through the world to find tbe love she seek?, and meets with a girl who, having been betrayed aud deserted by her lover, loses her senses and dies broken-hearted. But, undeterred from her search, Roseblossom becomes the wife of a forester, with whom she lives for a time in such perfect happiness that she caanot survwfe his death. The elves bewail the fate of the Queen, and curse love as fatal to peace and happiness." The Society is now in its second season, and has already given two invitation concerts. This is the first for which payment has been askod, and we feel sure the public response will be a hearty one. The objects of the Society are to foster and encourage the study of music, and its efforts are being appreciated by lovers of music in the town and district. The orchestra ia a capable one and members have been assiduous in attending practices, so that there is every reason to expect this ooncert to be as thoroughly successful as its predecessors. .
