o ■■■ . THE KING AS A JOCKEY. • There are not many people aware of the fact that the King has ridden in and won a horse race. The event happened about thirty--seven years ago in Ireland. The distance of the race was a mile and a half, the horse's name being Bupee. To the spectators the jockey's name was known as Captain Melville, but it was no less a personage than' the then Prinee of Wales, whose colours in this case were not the familiar purple, scarlet sleeves, tnd black velvet o'ap with gold fringe, iut all white. •■, The Prince owned iiupee, and it being one of his first urf experiences, he determined to ide the horse himself, and ajso'win if possible. This he did in capital style, although there were several wellknown jockeys riding against him. :<i BEAST OR HUMAN BEING ? When we have^found.the "missing ink " what.shall we do with him-^-bi 1 ier ? This question is put by the Oaily Graphic apropos of .the expediion to Java. May he be shot at ight and stuffed like other monkeys, >r must he be gently persuaded that ■enidttnoe in a European capital offers' advantages to a gentleman of bis oenuhar talents which ho is not likely o find in so rural a spot as ihe oriraeval forests of Java ? ' Will he also be.entitled to a vote if he takes up •esidence with us ? .
