County Sanitary Mattery
Afc tbe County Council meeting yesterday tbe committee appointed to report on tbe sanitation of the VVaimate suburbs stated that they had examined two slaughter-bouses and had found them in good order. As regards the proposed water supply, in the face of what Dr. Sym'S bad said} the committee urged upon tbe council the advisability of pointing dtlt to tbe residents of the suburbs, the advantage of their joining any suitable water' scheme that may be initiated by the Waiolate and farther, the committee suggested that all insanitary wells should be closed, and tanks substituted. Tbe committee recommended that Meisrs STftlkec and Studbolme should define the boundary of the suburbs, and that sanitary by-laws should be drafted by the chairman and solioitor and submitted to the council. Messrs "vyalker and Stadbolme'. bad defined the district and this j was agreed to by', the meeting. 1 A long discussion took place on j the question of sanitation, during* which it was pointed out that if cess-pits wore forbidden, some alternative would have to be provided. Finally, on the motion of Messrs Rhodes and Ross, Messrs Douglas, Walker and Studholme were appointed a committee to draw up sanitary by-laws and to deal with sanitary matters generally. Mr C. Hobbs was appointed County Health Officer at a salary of £l6 per year. A ratepayer at St. Andrews wrote that a neighbour's pig-styes were a great 'nuisance. Mr Hobbs is to be instructed to look into this matter, and into th; throwing of rubbish on the road near the St. Andrews ■sW-ion.
