Major Holmes captured Commandant David Marais at Beitoloi on October Ist* A small commando appearing at Saldanha Bay, the residents boarded a passing steamer and signalled a gunboat, which shelled and dispersed the Boers. October 21. Several hundred Boers above Babango are in a starving condition. The country is denuded, louche has issued a proclamation that natives found on farms unprovided with passes from their masters will be shot as spies. A Boer named Lewis has been tried and shot at Potchefstroom for complicity in the murder of two surrendered soldiers; also for his connection with the murder of Kaffirs at Prebarakstad* The Canadian scouts after a sharp fight captured a laager containing food, ammunition and several Boers, north* west of Balmoral.
Many additional Boer prisoners la Ceylon are volunteering for service in the British Army.
Contradictory reports are being olr. oulated in Natal regarding Do Wet, and recent prisoners persist that he died of wounds. There is a rapid outbreak of Anglophobia in German and Austrian newspapers, which contain violent denunciations of what they tern Mr Chamberlain’s hangman policy. October 22. Commandant Scheepers, with eleven others, has been banished front South Africa.
