SALARIES OF M.H.R's.
Throughout the colony there is a certain amount of grumbling about the proposed increase to the salaries of members of the House of Representatives, but w» do not think that tnere is much reason in the complaints. It if generally conceded that members of the House are, or rather ought to be, J e&pable, intelligent men, chosen by their constituents for thfiir abilities in oratory and in governing a country.* As such, a salary, or honorarium, if the word sounds better, of £§oo would not be too much. But it should stop at that. Some members are said to get far more than their honoraria m by.? pickings." and this is not as it should be. Let the, members be paid at a fair rate for their work, bat let that rate cover all the workv they do. It is ridiculous for the country to be paying the legislators a good salary,.and giving- them extra pay for any committee work. H r would be better to pay a salary • that would tempt good men who would be, satisfied with that salary, than to .fix a low salary '.with the.-chance of perquisites* The.agitation against the increase would, if directed against the system of grbabing all that can be got, do far mora good.
