Timaru Harbour Board

A special meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held in Timaru on Friday, Me J. Fraser presiding in the absence of Mr W. Evans, who is on the West Coast. The meeting was held principally to consider matters in connection with finance and tha revision of the Board’s staff.

With regard to finance, the Standing Committee reported that they had made inquiries through their banker and otherwise as to the best way of dealing with the 1900 loan, and they expected to be in a position to advise the Board shortly. They recommended that in the meantime the Board’s funds be reserved intact. With regard to the staff, they resolved to stop all overtime on both dredges, and that the three deck hands on both dredges should have their wages reduced from Ll2 to LlO 10a per month; that two of the Harbourmaster’s crew be reduced by Is per day, Bud that the wages of the diver be reduced from lls to 9a per day. The recommendations were all adopted. The dredge hands work an eighthour day, and the LlO 10s per month which they are to get in future is to cover all overtime and Sunday work. The secretary read the following statement showing the cost of the new extension works up to date : Preliminary expenses—Consulting engineer's fee, surveys, testing quarries, preiiminaiy expenses of loan, rent of quarry, purchase of land, law costs, plans and specifications, L 9722. Plant to be supplied to contractors by the Board—--15-ton crane, L 1072; 20-ton crane, L 3085; 24 tip trucks, L 3203 ; weighbridge, L 177 ; rails and sleepers, L 6915; sub-way, L 222;3 2; Otipua bridge, LSOO. Additional plant purchased by Board—B low-side waggons, L 720; progress payments on 10 tip trucks, L 300; donkey engine, etc., L 284 ; staging frame, etc., L 350 ; tools, L1U00; 8 locomotives, L 2876 ; engine shed, blacksmiths’ shops, etc., L 250; extension of tram line from King's boundary to upper face, L 2860; work done in quarry in advance of stone brought down, L7OO. Spent to date on account of contract, L 20.857 ; outside of contract, L 27,246. Total, L 48.133 (the contract price was L 44,943). All the works are of permanent character, . and only the best material has been used.
