The Columbia proved her superiority in reaching and on the wind. The Shamrock rounded the first mark seventy-two seconds ahead. On the second leg the Columbia gained twenty-four seconds. The Shamrock stood off on the starboard tack, allowing the Columbia the windward berth. The Columbia exhibited superior pointing, and aeon drew ahead. Captain Sycamore failing to blanket her, followed in the Columbia’s wake, ths latter winning by seventy-eight seconds clear, or 215 seconds including the time allowance and difference in s'art.
