CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS.

Christchurch, September 28. The local grain market has, during the week, been very quiet, a state of things that is usual at this time of the year. Toe recent reduction in freights by direct steamer has had the effect of keeping the wheat mark t steady, otherwise it is difficult to see how prosrnt prices could have been maintained. A f-ir quantity has b-aen shipped, or booked, tor steamers yet to sail, and thus an outh t ha* b en afforded for some 40,000 or 50.000 sacks. Millers continue to buy s nail quantities to replenish Blocks, but outside *'f their demands and the requirements for shipmeat by direct steamers, there is no business d hng. , The oats market continues witnont cnm"e. Offerings have again fallen off, and growers are generally asking higher pri ms than buyers are disposed to give. There is, however, a ready sale at quotations, and during the week a few small lines have changed hands. Ihe Abbey Holme has arrived at the Dlult to 1 ad oats for South Africa, taking in par of her cargo there and completing at Lyttelton. The Kilburn is also shoitly expected to load at the sane ports. Their cargoes f irm part of an old order. f'here is but little doing ift potatoes, exporters preferring to wait a little longer before making further puich ‘BeB, as the Sydney market does not warrant any speculation. At present but tew orders are coming from there. The nominal price is £1 to £-1 5s per ton at country stations, and growers are still soiling out for these prices.
