The short tupply -caused-keen competition, and prices rose, best beef being, quoted at 26s to 30s, others 22a 6J to, 25a. Five North Island bullocks sold at £l2 17s 6d, 15 lighter averaged £lO 12s 3d, prime local steers £9 to £ll, others £7 ssto £8 10s; prim-* heifers £8 10s to £9 12s 6cl, others £6 2s 6d to £B, prime cow.. £8 to 1510 ; others £5 15s to £7 10a. In store oat'le, 160 were yarded. Buyers in • most cstea declined to g ve the prices asked, and many were withdrawn, including a line of eows and heifers from the south at £4 12s 61. Half-bre 1 Hereford cows sold at £6 12a 61, 15 months caitie at 33., aud 18 months at £2 11- to £2 18a 6d; 12 to 15 months oatile brought £llsa to £2 ; two-year heif. ra £3 12s to £3 IBs 6d, two-year steers £4, three-year heifers £4 18a 61, dry cows £2 10s to £4l2s 6i. Daky cows met a fail sals, and good forts sold at £7 to £9lsa; others were neglected, £3 to £6. , She>*p—s9oo fat sheep were yarded, including several good lines of station wethers and a few good merinos. There wore a lot of unfiu shed crossbred and merino wethers, and many of -them were' passed. The market opened badly for all classes, bub improved slightly after wards, freezers showing a dec iue of 6d to 9d, inferior sorts mors, while secondary merinos were almost unsaleable, but butchers’ ewes only suffered very slightly Heavy wethers sold up to 225, beat freezers 18s to 21», lighter and maiden ewes 16s to 17a 9J, brst merino wethers 16a to 18a 3d, others 12s 6d to 15s; butchers’ beat ewes ISs to 18s 61, others 14s to 15*. I • fat lambs about 30 soli at 20s to 23s for prime, and 14s to 18s for others. Store sheep we-e a mixed yarding, and numbered 1628. The dry weather mte fered with the demand, and very few changed hands, wethers being almost unsaleable. Two small lots of bu-.chers’ withers sold at 15- to 15* 7d, others were withdrawn at 14s 6d to 16s; one lob of hoggets sold at lla lid, a few ewes at 13s 6d, and one lot of ewes and lambs at 10a 8d i all mut .on merino wethers sold at 9s.

Sheep—l 762 fat sheep were penned, neirly all crossbred wethers, ranging from very medium to goo), with very few prime. Freezing buyers operated to some ex'ent and kept prices up to las', week’s level. Best, crossbred wethers fetch'd 18s 6d to 21s 3d, medium to good 15s to 18<. light 14a to 15s 6d, beat ewes 15a 3d ta 17i 9d, and medium and light 10a 6d to 14a.
Pigs—236 pigs were penned, and all were keenly competed for. Suckers sold at 5s to lls, slips at 14a 6d t 6 16a 6d, stores 18» to 21s, porkers 23a to 30a, bacuners 36a to 54*, choppers up to 60s.
DUNEDIN GRAIN MARKET. Wheat—There is no change to report. There is a fair demand for prime milling and fowl feed, for which purpose medium milling brings up to almost the price of the best northern. Prime milling ia quoted at 2s 9£d to 2r 10d, medium to good 2s 7d to 2< 9d, broken aud inferior 2a to 2a 6d, sacks in. Oats—During the past faw days a keener derive to operate has set in, and as the quantity available is exceedingly small, sales are now readily made. Prime milling and seed fetched 2a 4£d to 2s 61, good to'beat short feed 2< 3Jd to 2a 41, interior to medium Is lOd to 2s 3d, sacks extra. Barley—Beyond placing odd lota for feed and milling, at from Is 8d to Is lOd, sacks extra, nothing is being done. THE WOOL SALES.
Messrs Dalgety telegraph as follows, under 'date Loudon, September 17th j—“The wool sales opened with a fair selection. TE re was a large attendance of buyers, and animated competition. As compared' with the dosing rates of last series, prices of merino and fine crossbred wools are higher by 5 per cent, to per cent. Medium and coarse crossbred are at par to 5 per cent higher. The total colonial wool available, including old stocks, is 303,000 bales. • The sales by private contract between the series amount to 2000 bales. The da .es of oar own sales' are the 18th and 25th Bept-mber, and the 4th, lOth and 14th October.”
Stdnkv, September 18. The local wool sales reflected ihe London advance, and competition for the finer classes of meiinoa and preasioa was very low. The market was firm add advancing. The catalogue included a fair sprinkling of new season's wool.
The National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, have received cable advice from their London. office that the wool siles opened M an average advance of per cent, oh merincfc of all descriptions, and an average advance of 5 uer cent, on crossbred ■ finest descriptions. The sales alsojopened firm on a par with last sale's average rate tor erosebced medium and coarse descriptions. $
