understood that one county gave information to a neighbouring onnty without any charge. It was suggested that an account for £lO 10s should be sent to th* Waimate County Council as a , counter ciaim, but finally it was ; resolved to simply " receive " the, account.

The Chief Engineer of Eoads, Wellington, wrote in regard to the Council's claim against the Waimate Council in respect to certain roads which they desired the Waimate Council to assißt in maintaining, pointing out that before the Council's request for a Commissioner to be appointed to enquire into the matter should be agreed to certain information j would have to be supplied. In dealing with the case, he wished the Council to note the intention of the clause was that it should apply in special cases where the road was largely used by traffic from another district which was of little or no use to the district in which the road was situated, i and it did not at all apply to a road where there was ordiuary ] interchange of traffic between districts, which was of mutual benefit. The Government did not wish to encourage litigation 'between local bodies under this head. Mr McLaren said that this Council would not be doing their duty if they did not press this matter to the very utmost, and if i they could not get justice from the. Government, thou he would aove that, in order to obtain lieir fair share from the Wai,nate County Couucol for converging traffic, this Council suoulJ erect toil bars.

It was agreed that thp Conncil's rfoKcitor, who is in Wellington, dtioaid bo wired to, and asked to look into the question.
