Notes and Comments.

' 0 " There is a movement on foot m Waimate at the present amateur time to form an Amaaxuletics. tern* Athletic Association, and if formed the Association will 611 a Jongfelt want. A large number of our young men have leanings towards matching themselves with others at running, cycling, and other contests, and yet they do not for several reasons enter the field against professional competitors, One of the reasons is that unless a man possesses powers above the ordinary bis success as a professional will be very small, and another that becoming a professional in one branch of sport debars him from competing in others. With a young association here there would be a number of beginners, and fora year or two at least a “ slow hand ” need not be deterred from entering the field of sport by a fear of his lack of speed. Amateur athletic associations are not always a success, but in Wairnate, where athletics are in a very backward condition, the new association should be a very live one. It has been said that it may do barm to the Caledonian Society’s sports, but that cannot be the case, as that society have, owing to the scarcity of beginners, made their Maiden Race open to all beginners, and not only those in the district, as formerly. A meeting of intending members i* to be held next week, when it is to be hoped a strong Association will be established.
