THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. THURSDAY, AUGUST 29,1901.
Wb 'were Very pleased to, remarl the stand taken by Mr IJardie a the Count; Oooncit mooting;'
terday, on the question of th* Waimate Hospital district. He wosof opinion that if the County boundaries are to be altered by the cutting loose from Waimate County of the two Pareota Ridings* then the boundary of the Waimate Hospital district nhould also be altered* and the' Waimate County in its reduced form be made a separate Hospital District. The question is almost as old as the Waimate hospital itself, having been discussed time and again, and though relation® between the Waimate Trustee*, and the South Canterbury Board are at the present time satiafao tory, they have not always' been so, and may at any become strained. The present relations between the two bodies give m opening for an agitation for * separate district for Waimate, bnt if the proposed alterations to the county boundary are made** the time will be a most opportune on* for reviving- the hospital question. The Otaio nver would: be a* much more natural boundary for both the Timaru and the Waimate districts, but the real objection In the present arrangements is that Waimate district pays consider* ably more in rates than come® back to the- ratepayers. Tn* Hospital Trustees very wisely took the suggestion of Mr Walker and decided to back up the action of the County Council, and it if . to be hoped that something will come of all this, and leave ni free to manage our hospital in our I own way.
