Robbery Under Arms.
Mklbodenk, Augu t 18. One of tfrfe most sensational stick ingup eases in the annals of the colony occurred early this morning on the tiam-line between Auburn and Hawthorn. About one o’clock the driver of the last horse tram from the oi’y was confronted by a masked man, who presented a revolver at his head. As soon as the tram stopped three other men, masked and armed, jumped on. One • man stationed himself at the front, another near the door of the car, while the third man threatened to shoot anyone who resisted or made a noise. He then relieved aeVen mrn who were 6n board of money ranging from £l3 to a few shillings ana jewellery. Ho also took the driver’s box containing oVei £3 and a quantity of tickets. One of the passengers who attempted to resist Was thrown to the door and the revoh er so forcibly pressed between his eyes that it indicted a nasty wound'. The scheme was well planned, the attack being on a sparsely popu'ated part of the line, and carried out in a few minutes.
A largo number of police began scouring the district within a short interval, but so frr fruitlessly.
