ANOTHER SURPLUS. £437,213 TO THE GOOD. [Br Teleghaph] . Wellington, August 16. The revenue for the year was £5,908,1)16, being Hie largest sum over received in one year. The expenditure was £5,4b9.7b2, leaving a surplus of £427,213. From last year’s surplus ot £605,251 a sum of £500,000 was transferred to the Puhli'c Vocks Fund, leaving £105.251 to be added to this year’s surplus, thus making the balance in hand £522,561. On public works "5i, 809, 021 was spent. The gross public debt on the 2lst March last was £49,-591,245. The act ual proiit on railways was £.209,289 and the capital cost of railways open for traffic £17,207,318, the interest per cent earned being £298. The post and telegraph expenditure was £416,383 and the receipts £502,181. The Government favour giving a capitation of £4 2s 6 I for education if offered by Parliament. A State coal mine is to be opened. It is estimated that the expenditure for next year will be £5,862,814, and the estimated revenue is £5,896,000. Cold stores for meat are to be erected and the House is to be asked to subsidise a line of steamers. No increase had taken place in the Old Age Pensions Loan of £IOO,OOO from the insurance company, said to be taken because the terms had been favourable and equal to the price at which we were selling debentures. No fresh taxation is proposed.
