Auckland, August 9. News by ihe Hauroto states that S& G. O’Brien, on leaving Fiji, was presented with an ad iress by chiefs, whd exj.res ed full satisfaction at Sir G. O’Brien’s actions and thanks for all TiA had done for the natives. Sir G. O’Briei replied that to spend much money oL water supplies and hospitals and other works for the benefit of the Fijians did not please the New Zealand party, whd wanted to take away the land the Fijians gaAre to the Queen, to break thb indhpensable communal system, and td separate the natives from the land ahcl get land and Fijian cheap labour them': selves. The New Zealand party thought foul and brackish water good enough for the Fijians to drink, and the should remember this .whenever they drank the good, wholesome water which had been provided. The emissaries werh ihostly renegade Fijians sent into th£ province to ertate trouble, bat a 1»W 'feai been passed making this pcn&l’, and thd natives had nothing to sfear and would hot be goaded to any act of Vipjenhe.
