COAL IN WAIMATE DISTRICT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—Much of the prosperity of a country or a district that has good and natural resources is nearly always dependent on the sort of people that ate in it. If the people hava plenty of energy and push, then; is some chance of the country or district bearing a population, an.l in the courao of time becoming f *mous for iis produce or its ni.viutactures. Now-, this district io very wealthy in minerals, such as stone, coal, aad potolay, and other valmbl* resources, and I propose in your future istusn from time t* time to lay th.-tse imtttec s before t«e public, and fi-.st io look nprm tho coal be;ls ou the iS*Bt Coast, »nd ewpecially in fiis district. From Otepopo to Blueciiff there is e\ery indication all round the outcrops of a vry ex ensive hold of coal. The outcrops i.f this tinM of coal show out at Otepo| o, Mr W. H. Teschemaker'a old run, a* Ngapara, Awamok., Papakaio, in th* Waitaki riverbed, at tha Needles, Elephant Hill, Waihao Downs M*kiki!:i, Jackson's, and Blued ff«. Now, it ia quite impossible ior the coals to show out at all these placei along the base of the hills, for a distance of over 50 miles, without coals being in this basin tint slopes to the eastward and rut:a out to sea, and we as a community that want coal more than any oth'-r colony should gte.rt and puo down a bore at once. Coal is getting scaicer an i very much dearer | every ye >.r as the demand increases. 1 would suggest that a test bore be put down in tome conv«nient place near tl.e town. I will suggest a place in your next iisue.—l am, etc., • JIS2, Proobess. '
