A great anti-Boer city meeting was held at Guild Hall, London. Tho stockbrokers formed a procession and marched so the building cheering and singing. Plana and specifications of the proposed new library were submitted to the committee and it was decided to call alternate tenders for building in brick of atone. It waa decided to apply to the Borough Council for the usual subsidy,. the committee to wait on the Council in support of the application. A meeting of the Waimate b ’anch ,of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held on Wednesday even ing, Mr Allan presiding. The presi dent and secretary were Instructed to arrange with the Rev. G. Barclay to deliver a lecture shortly. The annual meeting of the branch was fixed for October 7th. It was decided to for ward £9 of the £9 15s collected to the parent branch. The Timaru branch wrote stating that Mr Wagstaff had been appointed their secretary and Mr W. J. Tennerit, treasurer. Samples of the medals to be presented to school children as a souvenir in honour of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, have been received by the Education Board, and the medals are to be distributed shortly. The medals are very unpretentious ones, with little or no claims as regard

appearance, and, indeed, have very little to recommend them. They are made of copper, and in size are about equal to a penny , One one side they bear the imprint of the heads of their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess, together with the word-', “ Children’s souvenir, visit, Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to New Zealand.” On the other side H.M.S. Ophir occupies a prominent position, with the words, “ H.M.S. Ophir, in which their Highnesses came to New Zealand, June, 1901.” Each medal has attached to it, a small piece of red. white and blue ribbon, this being fastened through a small hole, punched at the top of the medal. A meeting of the Waimate School Committee was hold on Wednesday evening, Messrs Hamilton (chairman), Miller, Mathias, Scott, Nicol, Cameron, Colville and Smith being present. A letter was read from the Timaru Main School Committee asking the committee to support Mr J. Jackson for tlie Education Board, and in return they would support the Rev. G. Barclay. It was decided to accede to this request. The headmaster’s report showed that the roll number was 465, with an average attendance of 425. The architect had visited the school and the janitor’s cottage, and had declared that the infant room and the porches required attention. It wm decided to establish school technical classes and to apply for grants in aid of thorn, the classes to be for wood work and cooking. 'I ho chairman was instructed to write asking the Board to pay tho cost of carting water during the late dry season. Mr Colville reported having visited tho school and having found everything satisfactory inside. However, the fences wore old and dilapidated, the tank stands and tho lid of the well were rotten, and there was a bad drain from the master’s house. These matters are all to be referred to the Education ■ Board. Messrs Hamilton and Nicol were appointed visitors for the mouth, and the meeting rose.
