Waimate Temperance Reform Union.

A large audience filled the Knox Church Hall on Monday night, to listen to a temperance recital, “ From the Cradle to the Gallows,” by Mr Nicholas Tamar, travelling representative of the Prohibitionist, who has been in town for a few days, Mr T. Brown, president of the Union, occupied the chair.

Mr Turner was for many yeaxs an 'oiliuer in the Salvation Army, and as a result of his experience in the social work of that organisation gave graphic descriptions of the evils suffered by Children of drunkards in the slums of th j great colonial cities. He dealt abo with the opium habit, and the hold it was obtaining on Europeans in Australia and New Zealand, giving account of many instances which had "come under his own notice. For fully an hour and a half, Mr Turner kept his audience attentive and interested, bringing his recital to a close With the life history of a man executed for a murder committed during a drunken frenzy. At the beginning of the meeting, Mr Sherris contributed a vocal solo, which Was Well received. At the close of ihe address, several young man came forward and signed the total abstinence pledge. On the motion of Mr Q. H, Graham, seconded by Rev. Blight, a vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer.
