INSURANCE CANVASSING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —My attention has just been called to a letter which appeared in vour issue of July 4th, signed “ Bitten,” warning people about to insure their lives, against a canvasser offering a combined life and accident policy. As the Mutual Life Association of Australasia is the only office that has a com binecl policy, and I am sole representative in South Canterbury, I presume that he refers to me. As no complaint has been made either personally or by letter to the office, I conclude that his affliction has arisen from an overdose Of distorted statements from a rival agent. It would have been more manly on “ Bitten’s ” part to have applied to the head of the department ■where his “ wounds ” would have been carefully amended to, rather than sully your columns with stamments as scurrilous as they are untrue.—l am, etc., James Wallace, Agent M.L.A. Timaru, July 6th, 1901.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—“ One Who Knows” probably s a half-commission man, and hence be cause of his wrath. As he says he ‘knows,” my remarks were not ddressed to him. They were for hose who do not know. For the lenefit of those to whom it may prove iseful, I will state my case. Some ime ago I was canvassed under the ombined table of the M.L.A., and laving had some unpleasant experinces on football fields and bike racing,

thought it an advisable thing to take ut a small policy under Table Ec. Vhen it was insurance against accident , naturally concluded that it was gainst all accidents. However, a 3w days ago I was called on by another, anvasser, and my wrong impression ras put right. I was shown the MowingNo compensation will be ayable for injuries arising from natural isoase, or following the hounds in the unting field, or riding races, or driving ices, or steeplechasing, or playing

010 or football, or duelling or war, -*r om any medical or surgical operation, ccept where amputation is rendered iceasary by some injury covered by la policy.” (Any wishing to see a •py of the “ conditions ” may see ism, Mr Editor, at your office.) oca writing rny first letter I have sen informed that the same office sued a bonus iij 1899 for the five ■seeding years which cannot be Jorated on till 1904, except in the i3e whore a policy falls in through Jath or maturity 1 in other words, it mnot be commuted for cash, or placed i the credit of his premium. This sms that anyone insuring in 1894 iuld not take advantage of his bonus 111904 (except he dies or his policy Us in.) Perhaps “Oue Who Knows ” ill tell us if this is correct ?—I am,

Bitten
