Notes and Comments.
At the Canterbury Education Board’s meeting on dancing Wednesday, a letin ter was received schools. from Mr A. E. Lowe, Chairman of the Tai Tapu School Committee, with regard to the use of the school for purposes of amusement, application having been received for its ise for a social and dance. The i Committee, by a majority, resolved hat the letter be received, without
discussion, and granted the application. The Chairman further stated that he enclosed a letter signed by parents of children utending the school, which he was : n full • sympathy with. The letter from the parents, requested that the School Committee decline to allow the school to be used for lancing purposes, as they considered it inimical to the welfare of their children. Mr Lowe further wrote, stating that the objectors believed that the Act gave ample power to guard the interests of education in every way, and held (leaving out for the moment the moral aspect of dancing held by many) that leaving the power in the hands of the does, in many country schools, atil adversely to educational interests. It was unnecessary . to state that many persons considered promiscuous dancing highly immoral, and a very great evil, and the objectors believed that if the school to which their children were compelled to attend were used for such purposes, they would be quite justified in refusing to let their children attend. After discussion, the Board decided to take its solicitor’s opinion. It was further resolved to issue a circular to all School Committees, advising them that in such cases the incidental allowance would in future be withheld, in order to be used for, making good the damage done where schools were used foi other than school purposes.
In accordance with Chinese cus-
toms, the Celestials disinterring- in Grey month are Chinese. - proposing to disinter 140 of the faithful who are buried in' the local cemetery, and, after scraping the bones and titivating them up, to send them to China, that the souls of the dear departed may more easily rest in peace. Great excitement prevails in the place, for the proposal to billet 140 bodies, in various stages of putrefaction, in the middle of the town is not likely to secure unqualified approval. The Colonial Secretary, before consulting s th? local authority, granted permission for the bodies, along with others on the West Coast, to be stored in a building adjoining a public street, and close to a number of other resiliences, where they will remain for months, The Borough Council, which has control of the cemetery, has firmly protested against the proceeding on the score of health and violence to public sentiment) and baa instructed the sexton to oppose by force any attempt at resurrecting until another place of storage is provided. The Chinese, armed with the Colonial Secretary’s mthority, declare their intention to proceed. The Council is demined, at all risks, to resist until better arrangements are made, and have asked Mr Guinness, if need be, to bring the matter before Parliament.
