The South Sea Islands.

Lietttenant-Colonel Gudgeon, B/ tish Resident at Kara tonga, leaves here tomorrow for the Islands. He states that arrangements have been made by the Government for Mr S. Percy Smith (ex-SUrveyor-Gcneral) to go down to the South Seas in the new Government oil screw schooner‘Countess of Ranfurly in order to initiate a new system of government under the British flag on the recently-annexed island of Niue (Savage Island). The Government will be by natives, under the Resident Agent. Mr Smith will stay on Niue for about three months, and will have an opportunity there of pursuing his Polynesian researches. The Countess of Ranfurly, which is expected to sail from here for Baratonga and other islands of Cook Group ahd Niiie iu about three weeks’ time, will make regular trips to Nine. .
