Heavy Gale at Sydney.

A heavy southerlyjgale is raging. The steamer Manly* with thirty passengers, left Manley last night for Sydney, and broke down between the Heads. She drifted to within 100 parda of her destination before being picked dp and towed to an anchorage. Subsequently she drifted ashore near and the passengers were rescued at three o’clock this morning with -• some difficulty. The sea was the wildest ever experienced in Sydney harbour. Ballina reports that the tug Protector capsized in crossing the bar ; that five of the crew were drowned, and that the tug was broken dp. Shell Harbour reports that the tug Warwick is ashore at Long Point, One man got ashore, bub it is impossible to teach the others owing to the big sea running. July 2. . Those drowned by the wreck of the Alex'didet Berry were Captain Marshall • engineer Bartlett, Seamen Pratt and Jensen.
The hull of the Protector-, battered and torn, was thrown ashore on the beach.
The steering gear of the Alexander Berry failed, and the vessel, hurled on t j a terrible reef of rocks, went to pieces in full view of the onlookers. Tbe fireman, Pearce, had a lifebelt, and managed to get ashore after a rough experience.
