In the Senate during the discussion : on the Postal Bill Mr Dawson, of Queens- j land, said that Queensland had lost ; £30,000 revenue annually by the pro- I hibition of Ta'tersill’a sweeps. Mr McGreggor, of South Australia, ; said it was impossible to get rid of ; gambling, and he advocated State governed lotteries. • June 15. The Hon. N. Lewis, Tasmanian ; Premier, has wired to Mr Barton, em- i phatically protesting against the clsa-e i in the Postal Bill, which deals with the i carriage of mail matter in reference to •
sweeps. He cla ; ras that the Federal Parliament has no power to pass laws regulating gambliug; therefore, it is a« infringeof State rights to attempt to override legislation under which certain lotteries are legalised in Tasmania.
