Acclimatisation Society.
A meeting of the Waimato branch of the Waitaki and Waimato Acclimatisation Society was held ut the Criterion Hotel on Thursday. Present—Messrs 3. J. Adams (president). Jones, Smith, Binney, Bell and Sinclair. Outward and inward correspondence was dealt with., A letter was received from the Government, stating that hares were removed from the game list within the Waimate County and certain portions of the Mackenzie County. The President reported that with Mr Binney, he attended the United Council meeting at. Oamaru, and then gave a resume of the business transacted. A vote of thanks, proposed by Messrs Smith and CUeverton, was passed to the delegates. . After passing accounts, - the annual meeting was held. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit of £1 5s 10*3 in hand, was adopted, as also was the annual repo. t. REPORT. The report congratulated members on. the close of a very successful season, £74T7s 6d being derived from licenses as against £55 10s last year. The young front reared in the pondt-
lust year were liberated in splendid condition, and there were still 2000 Loch Levin and 2000 rai übow being reared in the ponds. These were looking healthy and strong. The -Vaitaki, daring the seison, was in capital order and some very large fish were secured, one, which was caught " by a gefit lonian who had fished for several years, in no.vay being pronounced by him a true salmon, thus showing (here must be salmon in the Wailaki. The Waihao also gave capital sport, the mouth being open fora long time owing to the floods, and the fish coming up with the tides, and those anglers who were fortunate enough to be on the spot then got largo baskets. Fly 'fishers were also fortunate, in the Waihao. The shooting season opened on May last, but large numbers who were at the Lake got few duck*, aUlnmgh a great number of swan fid!, Hreh birds are in capital condition. Hares are still plentiful but the Govern men t evidently did not Inina so, for, without (ton,suiting the so- Ui v. iln-y put tie-in on the ir.uno list. But the Hociet v lost n<, i ime in pro! ex Id ;1 g. and succeeded in gr.p; >g in - embargo remov'd. Shags are still numerous and causing a great deal of trouble. Tin's, they felt sure, was the only effectual means of establishing the salmon in the rivers, 'lot; society was anxious to secure some young salmon to rear in their ponds and ai'rm wards to liberate in the Waihao, which was very suit.due, with stretches of b-.iokish water, and if approved of, wouol communicate with dir Ayson on the sub.e'ct.
