THE COUNTY COUNCIL ADVERTISING.
TO THR EDITOR. Sir, —In a leading article published by you I notice reference is made to a letter sent by me to the Waimate Times covering a resolution passed by my Union ro tho above. So far as the facts were concerned, the item of news was taken frorn'a Waimate paper and brought before the notice of a general meeting, which passed a resolution and ordered rna to, forward it to the I >cal papers and the County Council. I anticipated, when I forwarded the resolution to the Times, that it would be inserted as a “ local,” and the footnote to my letter was intended as a request to forward the item to you also for publication. I rocogmsed. after the letter was posted, that I had made a mistake in making this request, and was not surprised, when the letter appeared in the Times, to find the editor of that journal had made the most of my error. It eyas not the intention of my Union, when passing the resolution, to cast a reflection on the Advertiser or any paper for taking advertising or any other work at a low rate, but to show the Council that they were not acting in the best interests of the ratepayers by “sweating” a portion of them. I think you will soe, Mr Editor, that the resolution was to that eflect. It is not the purpose of ray Union to sot employers “ by the ears.” We aim, rather, at unity between them for the purpose of keeping up a fair standard of prices, for we know that then our members will have a bettor chance of getting fair wages. With regard- to the wages paid in your office, it was with great pleasure I learned that your men wore being paid better wages than on some of the other journals, and this bears out the contention of my Union that batter conditions can pi'cvuil-if employers wishIn conclusion, I wish to again assert that it does not matter tQ tho Union if employers take work for love so long as they pay a fair wage to the employees ; but if the Union can, by resolution or otherwise, urge on public bodies or private individuals to give a fair price for their goods, so .that fair wages can be paid, it will do its utmost to that end. Trusting you will give this a» wide publicity as your leader and apologising for taking up your space, I am, etc., J. W. Roberts, Secretary, Canterbury Typographical Union. [advertisement.]
