THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1901.

! n' anblher column appears an S uvertiseineiit convening a flrieet!\g) on Saturday next, of farmers mi others desirous of forming a ..aimers' Olub for Waimate dis- ; net. The 'necessity for such,, a •lu.b must be patent to all who ipUce the great ad vanee of science •a applied to farming. Again, Acts of the most vital importance to stock-.breeders and- farmers have been passed, and a caryful study of these would tend-to their better understanding, or, should they not be in the-interests of fanners generally, strong and combined representations could be made to Parliament to hive them amended or thrown out altogether. At the preseut time the Trades and Labour Council in DuJiedin are trying to get legislation introduced into the Hou3e increasing the taxation, wuges, etc., connected with agriculture, arid it behoves the fanners to rouse themselves and demand that their side of the question should also be heard. Inr America farmers' unions have been formed with iuimeuse benefit to the settlers, and what has beeu done elsewhere can be done here. 4*e are not in any way deprecating the unions that have been already formed ; rather are we suggesting that they should be copied. In livfduai influence is now of such trifling importance, when all are nearly equally influential, tlr.it | for any class in the community to aflV);;y a large number of its meuiberg itj necessary, so as to [effectually voice the devices of that clas.-!,. and this in itself should be a .sufficient reason for the farmers to support th* proposed cb:b. ' There are many matters such a club could take up with benefit to its members, j such as establishing telephonic | communication throughout the district and the removal of railway anomalies, which lattei question in itself offers a large field j for energetic aud combine 1 effort. I It is not merely necessary, however, that farmers should have a comuuou ground to meet where stheir wants may be discussed, i but it muit be venvamb-jrsd that the preseut Government have a Department of Agriculture which issues in pamphlet and book form a great deal of valuable infonn.itiou 'annually. This is n->w, ii many cases, wasted, but ia a club such as the one proposed, such documents would be filed and probably read, while the introduction of a newspaper or two dealing with agricultural subjects would be of lasting interest and profit. We have not 'touched upon the social aspect • of the question in this article, as fch > benefits to be derived in. that direction from.such an institution as it is proposed to form must be apparent to all. The benefit to Waimate itself of having a Farmers' .Club,, with its headquarters in the town r would be so great that we trust the proposal will have the livelier sympathy., and support from the towns- : people. Much more might be written on the necessity of the proposed club and the work it could take up, but we think that we have said enough to convince any reasonable man that the movement should have his support. If, however, there are still some who are not yet convinced as to the benefits to be- derived from siicb an institution as pro- : posed, we can only urge them to turn up at the meeting nexi when ws are sure the , promoters will convince and , convert the most sceptical. We i hope to see at the meeting every 'twrnoi tlw -district
