Waimate A. and P. Association.
A committee meeting of the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association held on Saturday afternoon, Mr W. H. Beckett, president (in the chair), Messrs N. Francis, H. Hertslet. J. F. Douglas, G, Miller, H. E. McGowan, and j. H. Mitchell being also present. The Chairman explained that the
object of the meeting was to consider the advisability of entering a comprehensive exhibit at the winter show in one of the larger centres., A telegram received from Christchurch stated that only exhibits from Koad Board districts and not from counties could enter for the show there. It was decided to exhibit in Dunedin at the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show on June 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th.
During a lengthy discussion it was stated that the best collection gained the prize, apart from individual, merit or classification.
It was pointed out that the exhibitor might lose on his exhibit, but several members thought that in a competition which would so largely advertise the county if they were successful, a slight pecuniary loss should not be studied. Then again, there was bound to be a good market in Dunedin at that time.
It was generally held that lamb and mutton should be especially studied so as to uphold the reputation of “ prime Canterbury,” The following appointments were made to various committees for attending to the canvass and staging of each portion;—
Meat and poultry—Messrs Douglas, Hertslet and Mitchell. Boots and sheaves Messrs Pratt, McGowan, Cowan and Duggan.
Grain and seeds:—Messrs Scott, McLean, Guthrie and Hailey. Dairy produce.:—Messrs Mathias and li. Wright. Sundries :—Messrs Beckett, Geo, Miller and H. Saunders. Grasses and weeds Messrs Garland and Reilly. Garden produce and flowers:— Messrs Francis and Studholme. The chairman reported having interviewed the Hon. W. C. Walker on Friday, regarding the proposed siding at the Agricultural and Pastoral grounds, and the Minister had promised his best endeavours. He thought the Agricultural and Pastoral Association should co-operate with the Hoiticaltural Society. The Chairman received the thanks ,of the committee for his report. Mr Francis brought in the question of approaching the Hon. W. J. Steward to" try and Introduce a Bill to B.ecur,e a larger representation- of Waimate on
the Timaru Harbour Board. Waimate paid a great .deal more in ta?es, and was not nearly as well represented as o.ther districts. Members agreed as to the necessity, and it waa % decided to obtain full particulars and figures to place before a general meeting. Mr Francis also desired the Assertion to approach t.be Hovbrnaud task that one of the pew coming to J?e sw&nld bp stationed at Waiqmte, d&e secretary was instruotedvto Wfiite ip this effe&L ...
