The Dunedin Trams.

Dunedin, March 20. The city tramways were taken over by the Corporation to-day, the deeds having been signed. The Mayors and Councillore of the suburban boroughs, through which the trams run, and others were entertained at a luncheon by the City Corporation and the tramway directors. The Mayor, in speaking, said tha* the City Council had made a good deal. If they had not taken the trams others would have stepped in. This statement was confirmed by Mr G. Fenwick, chairman of directors, who said that the company had an offer of £48,003, and could get it to-morrow. 3-he flayer went gn to say that

Dunedin now had its own water supply, gaswoiks, abattoirs, and its own tramways. All that was wanted to make it an ideal city was to own the whole of the property and become its own landlord. He said it in all seriousness, and did not care if he was called a Socialist of the deepest dye. ) Afterwards the City Councillors and guests, in three decorated cars, went over the line, • followed by- about twenty cars, which were placed at the disposal of the public for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Free rides were given, but as a matter of fact the cars wore mostly taken possession of by juveniles, who travelled up and down, while the most of the ordinary travellers had to walk.
