A special meeting of the council was held last evening.. Present— His Worship the Mayor (in the chair) and •Councillors, Inkster,; Mann. Philip, Jones, Cameron Bean, G’Gonnpr and Sinclair. The first question on the agenda paper was the appointment of a town clerk;, advertised ior on
Tuesday, Before the applications were opened, Cr. Inkster asked that By-law No. 43 be read. This status that seven clear days notice must be given before appointing any employee. ilis Worship said it was a question if notice calling applications laid not been made before. This was another technical .objection, hut Or. Inkster was quite right in his contention..
Or. Inkster said he had not noticed it on the night when it was decided to call for applications.
It was decided to hold the matter over till later on in the evening, when other business might necessitate a special meetinir. The Clerk stated that he had, as instructed, interviewed the nightman. He had sold his horse and dray to Mr Tiiorns, hut if he could arrange with the latter to hold over delivery for a month he could continue his duties for that time. Cr. Inkster said Mr Idioms had seen him and had explained the position. He had ail vised him to attend at the council that evening.
His Worship said that they sliouM not depend on indi.vidtud members to tell what employees of the council wished brought before the council. It was employees’ business to go to the chairman. It. was not as if he wore incapable. (lr. Inkster: There-is nothing to got your back up over. 1 suggested ids coming lime and will mice tin* blame.
His Worship still thought the chairman the proper person,to be spoken to on the matter. dr. Inkster said the Mayor and O. dolt man had been appointed to see Mr Smith re his contract as nightman. Had that been done r

The Mayor said he happened to meet Mr Smith in the street, and spoke aho it it, but lead had no time to meet him as part of a deputation. The nightman was calk'd, and stated that ho hud sold one horse to Mr Hiorns (borough surfaceman), but if the latter could go on with the horse lie had fora month, he would continue to act fur that time.
It was decided to adopt this course, the horse and cl.ay to ho inspected by the Works Committee r.t 1‘) a m. to-day. Crs. O’Connor ami Jones proposed, and it was cairio.l, that applications be called for the position of nightman at a yearly remuneration of £l5O. After Domain Hoard business, tile Council commenced to revise the burg 'ss roll, but it was found they hail no power to make alterations, and it wag decided to send the roll to tiie VainerGeneral and ask him to make the necessary alterations.

Tho Borough Council sat as a Domain Board after its meeting las* night. The caretaker’s report wag read ami approved. The committee appointed to visit (be Park recommended a number of alterations in the caretaker’s cottage, including the addition of two small rooms. They also recommended the erection of a fountain between the two plots of flower garden. Tho report was adopted. Tire committee appointed do report on the encroachment of the river advised the ereat on of two protective groins to throw the water to the middle of the bed'; also, that a chain width of broom be cleared, the broom do be cleared by the Board’s caretaker.
Tho Chairman expressed indebtedness to Mr Bremner, County Engineer, for advice in forming the report. It was decided to adopt the report and to ask the County Council if it would undertake the work and render the account to the Board.
Accounts passed last meeting were formally passed for payment.
