THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1991.
Now-that the time for holding the Easter volunteer encampment draws nigh, it would be well to call the attention of the officer commanding the. district to the claims of Waimate district to provide a site* Easter encampments have been held all round Waimate, but never yet has it been within any reasonabledistance. There are numbers of places—at the Gorge, for instance. —where abundance of water and a good camping .ground exists, while for the mounted infantry, now recognised as our main 1 reliance> should' we be unfortuo nate enough to witness the horrors of war In our own land, there ig[ an ideal field for skirmishing and outpost duty in hill country. Few places, we believe, are- so* thoroughly for the. enca'papmeht, "for the rifle range is>^p^»ly! half a mile ‘ from the' close, by and tbefafc
horses. Waimate district tabes aket'Q and active interest in volunteer matters, and if the officer commanding can see- his way clear to give- Waimate a turn—and it is now undoubtedly heir right to be considered—it will igo a long way towards helping to render our corps more efficient, and, if possible,, more enthusiastic.
