THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 1901.
The ..Imperial hoops who have berui on a visit to Australia in connection"with the Commonwealth celebrations, are now expected to arrive in Dunedin on Saturday next, and they will proceed North on Monday. They will, of course, pass the Junction Station, but so far as the people resident here are concerned, no satisfactory spectacular display can be anticipated there. In Timaru, however, arrangements arc likely to be made that will, at ; least, include a parade and an exhibition of some of the famouscorps of the Old World. It should bo the endeavour of this community to obtain all the facilities it can to be present at the display' in Timaru. For this purpose we trust that the Mayor will act with out delay aud obtain from the Government a concession in the railway fares, if not the running of special trains. The interest is likely to be increased when the public fully realise what historically important regiments are represented. They include men and officers picked from the flower of the British army. Many of them have fought in the Soudan; some have won their laurels id India, while the Black Watch and the Coldstream Guards have only to be mentioned in order to recall some of the greatest events in English military history. In addition to these corps of veterans we must add the Northumberland Fusiliers, and the Eoyal Irish Fusiliers, who won golden opinions for themselves on the blood-stained fields of South Africa. Add to this already noble list tho Eoyal Scots, Seaforth Highlanders and the Horse Guards, and we have a really magnificent representation of the soldiers of the King that it will be the privilege of few New Z«alanders to witness again. For this reason we reiterate the hope that the. Mayor will again display his usual activity and try to have suitable train arrangements made for this . unique occasion. In Britain we would go far to see the.samp pageant, it / would be a thousand pities if we missed it at our very door, - \
