The day broke dull and showery and this state Of weather coatinued throughout the day. There was a high Wind, and this made things very uncomfortable, but people were evidently determined not to misa the eveut of the year, judging by the j nurnbeis who turned out, Shortly before eleven, the Waimate Brass j Band, headed by the pipers and followed by officials and members of the* society, left town for Victoria Park. A large crowd followed, and from this -time onward a stream of people was moving to the grounds, The events were got off well 'to time, and although in aorae events there was little competition, were a3 much enjoyed as the cold, windy weather permitted. The publican's booth, undqr charge of Mv O'Leary, and the confectioner's, under Mr Sytnon, did a ~good business. The officials and oommittee worked well.
