The Waimate Advertiser. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 27, 1900.

Ever since the election of 'councillors to fill the- late vacancies caused by the voluntary resignation of five members, we have forborne to make any remarks on the- subject. The number ot votes in favour of returning the old councillors were 'secured and they have resumed tfheir seats. Until wo have seen how they conduct tbernsel yes in future, we will make no farther comment. But it may be advisable to- make mention of the leading article which appeared in the Morning Post on. the subject. This Timaru paper has evidently 'been watching the proceedings with interest, and writing after the event and with all the facts before it, it still maintains that the Mayor was- right in the stand he took. We do. not think the majority, of the ratepayers read carefully the various legal opinions put forward, so that it may be of interest to all to know that an outside paper takes such interest in the case as to write, supporting what is termed the •dosing, side. After dealing with the various aspects of the case at some length, the Post concludes as follows — " Oa the whole, and ias regards the Mayor, one ihing is pretty obvious, that some other feelings are at work than simple love of justice and- muncipal integrity. It has been understood, for instance, that he is in favour of the tax on unimproved values, and this, for some reason, does not suit certain of the Councillors and their friends, hence imparts some opposition. During the recent' election the most : absurd stories were set afloat, that he wanted to build town halls, construct waterworks, purchase recreation grounds,, etc., all of which would swamp, the citizens with ruinous taxation. This obviouslyiwas dishonourable and misleading since whatever progressive ideas a man might have,, everything of this, nature would depend* upon the vote of the ratepayers themselves* Let ms hope that any future developments may be of a more pacific and genial character.'*'
