THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1900.
On Monday evening next, in the Borough Council Chambers, ' a very important meeting will be held. This is one at which the Borough Council and the Library Committee will meet to discuss the question of erecting a suitable library building. This, it is not unreasonable to suppose, will bring up the question of the erection of a Town Hall, which j was mooted m our columns some little time ago., No right-think-ing person will deny the need that exists for such a building, but there are many, even in this community, who would oppose it on the grounds that it might nfean an additional rate, perhaps amounting to a few shillings p?r year. Even ta>, chief town of Cheviot, Mackenzie, which has a population -of SOO, has a lat*ge town hall", and surely this' important borough could -rise, to the • occasion and erect, on its present vacant and suitable section, a, building worthy of the town. Some simple method of raising the necessary funds will likely be promulgated, and it is to be hoped the subject will receive the attention It deserves. .opposed to a reasonable schema will expose themselves to a great
deal of adverse criticism, as the feeling in town is strongly in favour of such an improvement if it can be done without excessive or unreasonable rating.
