CHINA'S FUTURE.
Mr Demetrius Boulger, the wellknown traveller, has been a close student of Chinese affairs, and in an article in the current number of the Contemporary .Review, reiterates what he has been writing since 1895 concerning the Celestial Empire and its relations with Russia, Mr Boulger allows only two years for Hhe complete absorption of China by Russia unless determined step? are at once taken. The&e, he advises, are the immediate seizure by Britain of the Island "of Chusan, with its unequalled harbour of Ting-hai, by 10,000 Indian troops. This would make our •' sphere " in the Yang, tse-kiang Valley secure; ancU'V.: Boulger, with American directness, says we shall be fools if we wait to be odgpd out of what hold we have. What is more interesting to us in New Zealand is that the writer bases his plea for this strong step "on the future necessities and expectation of Australasia, which in another century may contain 50,000,000 of our own kith and kin." He thinks it a most favourable moment to settle with Russia, once for all, even at the cost of war.
