Hockey. SYDENHAM v. WAIMATE.

The first hockey match played in Waimate took pUce on Thursday. There was a good attendance of spectators, although it was not the usual half-holiday. The ground was in a very 'good state, considering the recent rain. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Wilson and Misses Franklin and Akliurst, to whom the thanks of the Olnb ia due. Mr E. R. Good (Christchurch Drapers Club) made an efficient referee. On bullying-off, Waimate assumed the aggressive, but Syden- , ham soon shifted the play to the ■ local team's half, where give aud take play continued for nearly the whole of the first ppe!l. Towards the close, Ford (Sydenham three-quarter) hit the ball ■ ■into the Waimate circle, ami Craig staking, rather indifferently, the ball rolled through the 1 <cal backs and the goal posts. The first spell ended in netitral | territory. Soon -after the start of the second spol 1 , the visitors pressed hard, and by hard striking Jacobs scored. Syden ham continued the attack, and aftet some good passing near ,thn circle Free ' scored. Waimate now woke up, but bad passing among the forwards spoiled their chance scoring. From a corner hit, Jacobs shot his second goal. No farther ■ score was registered, the game, ending in the local team's twentyfive* Considering the team opposed to them, the Waimate ■ boys played very well. The ! Sydenham included two Canter- j bury representatives, Jacobs and Ford. After the matah, Mr Langdown, the Sydenham captain, thanked the Waimate Club for their hospitality, and hoped that the two clubs would make the match an annual one. Rev. Fowler replied on behalf of the Waimate Club. Cheers were then given for the two teams, and the ladies, who had provided the refreshments. The visitors returned home by the express.
