THE LATE FIRE IN WAIM ATE
'TO THE EDITOR. Sir. — Noticing your article in Tuesday's issue of tha A»veetiseh, condoling with Mr Smith, of the Wai mate Times, I feel sure you will heartily agree wibb rae thab subscripfcion lists should -be opened tip at once, both in the town and country, in aid of Mr Smith, and in suggesting such, -I -feel sure I am only giving voice to the wishes of all fair and impartial p9ople of this district. Mr Smith's losses are so recant and the facts so well known that it is quite unnecessary to make any comment. Trusting you will take the matter up, aEd. I 'fesl sure the public will heartily respond. — I am, etc, Er^vrN Reilly.
Sir — I think the 'townspeople eau see now the necessity of having a nightwHuohua-iR to look after thoir premises. The burning of the Wftimate Times office wa3 -cartainly the result of no accident, neither was fcbo burning down of the Public Library and the adjoiniug buildings an ascident. All this devastation of some of our oldest buildings is the premeditated work of some dastardly rulSam who seems to do all th€ injury he can to one of our most respectable citizens. This house fiend is, I verily believe, still in our midst, waiting for another opportunity to perform his hellish work. He will spare neither house nor individual, all musb be consumed in the fire he kindle?. Surely the shop keepers, and others too, could afford to pay a few pence per week towards defraying the expenses of a night watchman. i Trusting that Something will bo done to stay the hand of that house fiend who is endeavouring to destroy our buildings, and perhaps too, ourselves. — I am, etc, One in favour of a -Night "Watchman.
