War Items.
The preparations which are being made for che reception of 6,000 Boer prisoners at the oamp at Diyatalawa, 160 miles fronf Colombo, in Ceylon, are now approaching completion. Buildings have been commenced for the, accomodation of the captives. 4. detachment of the Warwickshire regiment will furnish the guards. An important step has been taken in Natal by the arming of the Natal Naval Volunteers from Durban with 4.7 guns and long-range 12. pounders. The men "have shown great ability in the use of these weapons. The corps of Natal Volunteers, who were engaged for six months only, have received an intimation that their services are required for a further period. Twelve invalided soldiers frdm the front have been given a home by Princess Louise &t Koseneath Inn, on Gare Loch, Clyde. Princess Louise has vacated the Royal suite of rooms and' arranged them as a soldiers' convalescent home. The Princess herself put the finishing touches to the rooms preparatory to the arrivalof the men. Including Lord Eoberts and Lord Kitchener, more than thirty members of the House of Lords have now proceeded to. the front. By the way, it is said that when Lord Kitchener first joined the Royal Engineers nearly thirty years ago he diiLnot at once take to the army, and entertained serious thoughts of going on to the stage. He consulted an actor, whose advice, " Stick to the army, Mr Kitchener, it's a better shop than the boards ! " after he had given him an insight into the seamy side of theatrical lite, decided the future Sirdar's course." The pretty wife of Mr Thomas Atkine ! A Cape mounted policeman relates that when a Boer prisoner expressed himself to a British soldier as confident that the Boers would win in the end, because the Lord was on their side, the British soldier said, " Gam !— you've got no show ! Ain't we got 50 bloomin' lords on our side ? "
